90’s Grunge Revival in 2013

Courtney Love
Who remembers the 90’s…Nirvana, Friends, Drew Barrymore with daisy’s in her hair. A lot of my favourite music came out of the 90’s so I’m very excited that 90’s Grunge is making a comeback this year. Of course it will have an updated twist so we don’t all end up looking like Courtney Love but the basics are still there, especially in the hairstyle.

It has been sneaking up for a while now with the invention of Balayage and Ombre a couple of years ago. Easy maintenance with that grown out look rather than the typical highlights where regrowth seems to appears within seconds of leaving the salon. This look then developed into brightening up the ends with other colours apart from blonde, such as oranges, reds and then came pastels.

Pastels are a little more harder to achieve, especially if your hair is coloured dark. You have to get to a very light blonde in order to achieve the soft pastels that are worn by the likes of Kelley Osborne and the Olsen twins.

The revival of 90’s Grunge keeps the traditional easy-to-do hair, with no super smooth styles but more of a messed up choppy feel. The colours that will dominate have moved on from the soft pastels to more punchy colours. Brighter versions of the same popular colours like pinks, purples, peaches and reds will appear as people are getting braver with their colours and moving on from the long overdone ‘natural’ colours.

At Live & Let Dye we are very excited about this. We have always loved our bright colours and if things a little more rock ‘n’ roll it suits us just fine!

Think choppy shaggy ‘unkept’ hair. Use a volumising Shampoo such as ‘O&M Fine Intellect’ which by the way smells like cake! Use products such as ‘Holistic Hair – Sea Salt Spray’ and blow wave lots of texture into the hair or air dry and scrunch as its drying with your hands. A wee spritz of hair spray for shine & hold and you are done. Try a blunt, choppy fringe. It can all still be made a bit more glam and pretty with little braids, which are sticking around this season  aswell. Perhaps add a little hairpiece such as a sparkly clip or flower to contrast with the messier texture. Wear it with attitude, tuck those ripped blue jeans into your Doc Martins, pull on a slouchy band T or plaid shirt. Be comfortable and look awesome at the same time. Last of all, channel your inner Kurt Cobain and ROCK ‘N’ ROLL BABY!
